What Cabling and Bracing Actually Do
The two are related but different jobs. Cabling installs a cable high in the crown, usually about two-thirds of the way up from the defect, running between limbs or between co-dominant stems. Bracing goes lower and more direct: threaded steel rods are installed straight through a weak fork, a developing split, or a cracked union to physically hold the two sides together. The goal of both is the same. Take load off a structural weakness so the tree can keep standing safely. Cabling and bracing are governed by a real industry standard, ANSI A300 Part 3, the supplemental support systems standard that ISA-certified arborists follow for hardware ratings, anchor placement, and inspection intervals. The Tree Care Industry Association administers that A300 standard. It exists because a support system is not install-and-walk-away.
