Why Your Lot Has Alders in the First Place

Red alder, Alnus rubra, is the most common hardwood in the Pacific Northwest. It is a pioneer: shade-intolerant, fast in youth, and favored by disturbance. Logging and burning increase it. So does a bulldozer. Any ground opened to full sun in western Washington grows alder if there is seed nearby, and there always is.

That history is written into Eastside neighborhoods. Clear a hillside in 1965 for a subdivision, leave the buffer strips and the wet corners alone, and alder fills them within a decade. Sixty years later those trees stand in even-aged clumps along the back property lines, in the stream corridors, and in the strip between the fence and the greenbelt. They all went up together, which means they are all reaching the end together.

Alder also does something useful that keeps it around. It fixes nitrogen through bacteria in its root nodules, which enriches poor soil and is a large part of why it is such an effective colonizer. Sixty to Seventy Years, and That Is the Whole Story

Douglas fir routinely runs several centuries. Western red cedar goes longer than that. A homeowner who thinks of trees as permanent fixtures is calibrated to conifers, and alder does not work that way.

What that means practically: an alder that looked fine ten years ago can be structurally spent now, and nothing dramatic has to happen in between. Decay moves into the trunk and major unions. Limbs die back in the upper crown and stay hung up there. The wood, which is not strong to begin with, gets weaker. The tree is not sick. It is finished.

This is also why alder responds poorly to the interventions that buy time on other species. A structural support system can extend the service life of a sound big leaf maple with one bad union. It does very little for a 70 year old alder with decay in the butt, because the problem is not one defect, it is the whole tree. How Alders Actually Fail Here

Three patterns cover most of what we see.

Windthrow in saturated soil. Alder often occupies the wettest ground on a property, which is exactly where root plates lose their grip in a soaked winter. A November atmospheric river followed by a wind event takes whole alders over, roots and all. The clumped, even-aged growth habit makes this worse: once one goes, the ones beside it are suddenly exposed to wind they never had to handle, and they follow. Retained deadwood. Alder does not self-prune cleanly. Dead limbs stay in the canopy, dry out, and come down in pieces at unpredictable times. Over a lawn that is a nuisance. Over a driveway, a hot tub, a play structure, or a roof, it is the reason to act.

Basal and stem decay. Fungal decay in the lower trunk is common in older alder and it is often much further along than the outside suggests. Conks at the base, hollow sound under a mallet, and seams in the bark are the tells. This is the failure mode that puts the whole tree on the ground rather than a limb.

None of this shows up in the way homeowners expect. Alder leaves stay green and the tree can look fully alive right up until a structural failure. Judging an alder by its foliage is the single most common mistake we correct on site.

What to Look At, and When to Call

Walk the tree twice a year, once in full leaf and once bare, and look for the following. A thinning upper crown with bare branch tips. Large dead limbs suspended in the canopy. Mushrooms or shelf fungi at the root flare or on the trunk. Vertical seams, cracks, or bark that has separated. Soil heaving on one side of the base, or a lean that is newer than it used to be. Any of those on a tree within striking distance of the house moves it from watch to assess.

The reason to look in winter is that the structure is visible then. Deadwood you cannot see in July is obvious in January. The reason to look in summer is that a crown that fails to leaf out fully tells you the tree is losing the ability to move water, which usually means the vascular system is compromised.
